THE BEST ICE CREAM PARLOR EVER , ACCORDING TO ME

Legend has it that there was a second very important invention at the Blackstone Hotel around the same time. Butter Brickle, the toffee-flavored ice cream with toffee bits in it, was reportedly debuted to the world from the kitchens of the Blackstone in the mid-1920s. However, try as I might, I ran into some dead ends tracking down the exact story from anyone still alive today. A U.S. trademark search turns up the first use of “Butter Brickle” in 1924, and the first registration in 1928 by Council Bluffs candy manufacturer John G. Woodward & Co. Inc. but this is only for the butterscotch-inspired candy, not the actual ice cream. My search for the inside scoop eventually led me to one of Omaha’s from-scratch creameries, Ted & Wally’s, where co-owners Joe Pittack and Jeannie Ohira were already familiar with the factoid that Butter Brickle was invented at the Blackstone. They even disclosed that whenever Ted & Wally’s runs a print advertisement, it features an illustration of the famed flavor as a subtle tribute.
